In no way am I a supporter of torrents or pirated software, but I read this on another tech blog and thought it would be interesting to make a post on. Most people that are reading this blog probably already know what BitTorrent is, but this product is built around making it easier to use. The Wyzo Browser is built around Firefox, and at writing time is in it’s alpha stages. From screenshots I’ve looked at, it appears to make downloading things from torrents easier by making them look like regular downloads you would conduct with Firefox. They also have a Firefox extension for people that don’t want to download another standalone browser.
What do I think of this? I’m pretty much against torrents and P2P for illegal reasons in general, so I for one probably won’t be using it, but it caught my attention because I haven’t heard of anything quite like this before. On the other hand, why would the less technically knowledged user want to switch to another browser anyway? It’s kinda like getting my aunt to switch to Firefox, but all she says is Internet Explorer 6 is fine. People.
Update: As of Wednesday, June 13th, 2007, we are on Wyzo’s latest news coverage press page! =)
So why exactly are you against torrents or P2P? Because it’s illegal and deals with pirated software? But you use the internet? How does this fit?
Torrents or P2P in general are just a convenient way to distribute data. Nothing else.
The majority of people that use P2P clients like Limewire and torrents use them for illegal reasons. Fine, if you want to share files with your friends through P2P or torrents, there’s nothing wrong with that. I was referring to illegal uses.
